About Course

This course is intended to help those working with children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to identify: when a child has special educational needs, the nature of those needs and how to support them. It aims to help Early Years Foundation Stage settings to meet the requirement to ‘provide specific help to individual young children’.

Descriptive Points

Understand the concept of Special Educational Needs (SEN) and its significance in the context of Early Years education. Develop a holistic approach to identifying the first concerns related to SEN in young children. Recognise the importance of gathering information from parents and caregivers in the identification process. Learn how to listen to and incorporate the voice of the child when assessing their needs. Master the art of making effective observations within the school or playgroup to identify potential SEN. Understand the role of Early Years Tracking and the Progress Check at age two in the identification of SEN. Recognise and address behavioural, emotional, and social needs in children, implementing relevant interventions. Gain knowledge about speech, language, and communication needs in young children and implement suitable interventions and actions. Identify and address sensory and/or physical needs in children, including hearing and visual needs, by implementing appropriate interventions and actions. Recognise physical needs in children and apply appropriate interventions and actions to support their development.

  • Create an inclusive environment for children with multi-sensory needs.
  • Support children with physical needs by implementing relevant interventions and actions to aid their development.
