About Course

This course is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the constitutional framework of the United Kingdom. You will examine the UK’s political system, the sources of the UK Constitution, and the role of key institutions, including the monarchy, Parliament, and the judiciary. Over the course of this module, you will explore the principles of constitutional law that underpin the UK’s system of governance. This will include a detailed analysis of the separation of powers, the rule of law, and parliamentary sovereignty.

This course is also designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of how the UK legal system operates.Learning about the UK legal system can be valuable for several reasons: Namely, the UK legal system has played a significant role in shaping the development of the common law tradition. Many legal concepts and principles that are used in common law systems today have their roots in the UK legal system.   • By the end of this module, you will have a strong understanding of the UK Constitution, its history and development, and the key principles of constitutional law that underpin it. You will also have a strong understanding of how the legal system in the UK operates. You will be equipped with the tools to critically evaluate the UK's system of governance and to engage in debates about the role of the Constitution in contemporary society.
  • To be able to describe what a constitution is in the context of the UK constitutional system
  • To classify the different types of constitutions that exist
  • To describe the structure of the UK constitution
  • To identify the various constitutional institutions in the UK (that make up the executive, judiciary and legislative powers)
  • To understand the process of devolution in the UK
  • To understand the various constitutional principles including the separation of powers, the rule of law, prerogative powers and parliamentary sovereignty.
  • To understand and define the role of constitutional conventions in the UK constitutional system.
  • To understand and describe the principle of ministerial responsibility and its role in holding government to account
  • To understand how the civil court functions in the UK and which courts make up the civil courts.
  • To understand which courts make up the criminal division of the legal system in the UK and understand how they operate
  • To describe the track system in the UK
  • To describe the various types of crimes that are heard in the UK criminal courts (indictable, triable either way and summary offences).
  • To describe the function of the appeals court and the supreme court.
  • To explain the role and function of the legal profession in the UK
  • To understand and define the various actors within the legal system in the UK
